Havildar Hangpan Dada: The Hero of Naugam

Havildar Hangpan Dada was a soldier in the Assam Regiment of the Indian Army and a symbol of unparalleled bravery and dedication to the nation. Born on October 2, 1979, in Boduria village in Arunachal Pradesh, Hangpan Dada displayed the true spirit of a warrior during his lifetime, culminating in his supreme sacrifice during an anti-terrorist operation in Jammu and Kashmir. For his extraordinary courage and gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military decoration.


Early Life and Military Career

Hangpan Dada hailed from a humble background and joined the Indian Army in 1997. His journey was driven by his love for the country and the desire to serve in uniform. Over the years, he earned a reputation as a disciplined and fearless soldier, eventually joining the Rashtriya Rifles, a counter-insurgency force operating in Jammu and Kashmir.


The Naugam Operation (May 2016)

In May 2016, Havildar Hangpan Dada was part of a search and destroy mission in the Naugam sector of Jammu and Kashmir. This operation aimed to neutralize infiltrating terrorists who had crossed the Line of Control. On May 26, 2016, Dada and his team encountered a heavily armed group of terrorists in the treacherous terrain of the Himalayas.

Despite the adverse conditions and numerical disadvantage, Dada engaged the enemy with exceptional valor. He led his team to intercept the infiltrators and personally eliminated three terrorists in close combat. During the intense firefight, he sustained grievous injuries but continued fighting, showing unmatched determination. He engaged the fourth terrorist in a hand-to-hand battle, ultimately killing him before succumbing to his injuries.


Gallantry and Legacy

Havildar Hangpan Dada’s courage, leadership, and indomitable spirit were instrumental in foiling the infiltration attempt and saving countless lives. His actions reflect the highest traditions of the Indian Army, embodying qualities like fearlessness, selflessness, and loyalty.

Recognizing his supreme sacrifice, the Government of India posthumously awarded him the Ashoka Chakra on August 15, 2016. His wife, Chasen Lowang, received the award on his behalf during the Republic Day ceremony in 2017.
