The Indian Army was called in on Sunday to launch operations to rescue scores of residents stranded in severely inundated residential neighbourhoods in the wake of the damage caused by Cyclone Fengal.

A Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) team, comprising Indian Army troops of the Chennai Garrison Battalion led by Major Ajay Sangwan, rescued around 600 stranded residents from Krishna Nagar, Kuber Nagar and Jiva Nagar.
The Indian Army troops were requisitioned by the Collector to rescue stranded civilians from approximately 500 houses in the Krishna Nagar area of Puducherry where water levels reached approximately 5 feet in some localities.
The column comprised one Officer, six Junior Commissioned Officers and 62 Other Ranks personnel and had marched to the city from Chennai overnight. The operations were conducted in coordination with NDRF teams, police forces and the civil administration, a press note said.
